Psalms 24:1-2
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.
To whom does the earth belong? We have divided it into states along geological and political boundaries. We have developed flags to mark our territories and built armies to protect them. We have elected leaders to govern them or succumbed to leaders taking governance of them for themselves. We have gone to war and spilled blood over them.
But to whom does the earth really belong.
The world belongs to the Lord, and over it He has absolute sovereignty.
The exercise of any authority which is not the Lord's is given by God according to His sovereign will. The most powerful rulers have no real sovereignty next to the sovereignty of the Lord. They are merely stewards or vassals whom God will use for a time to achieve His ultimate purposes.
Even the wickedness wrought through the free will of man acting in disobedience of God shall be used by the Lord to achieve His end.
What gives God such absolute rights of the world and everything in it?
He created it. Without Him, it would not exist. There would be nothing. More than that, He has limitless power over it. Who can cause the storms to rage or silence them at a word? Who can raise mountains up out of the dust and shatter them to pebbles in an instant? Who can flood the ocean waters onto the earth or dry them up to sandy bottom?
Who but the Lord?
This sovereign God is worthy of our praise.
